Privacy Policy
Youtube Music Together is a browser extension that lets people listen to YouTube Music together in shared rooms. It runs only on music.youtube.com. This page explains what data the extension and its server process and why.
Data we process
- Anonymous device account: when the extension is installed it creates an anonymous account on our server with a randomly generated nickname (you can change it), your interface language, the browser platform, the extension version and the times the device was created and last seen. The extension receives an access token that is stored only in your browser; our server keeps only a one-way hash of it.
- Rooms: when you create or join a room we process the room code, the nickname and role of each participant and when they joined and left. Other participants in the same room can see your nickname.
- Playback: while you are in a room, the extension reads the player on music.youtube.com (the YouTube video ID, title, artist, duration and cover image of the current track, its position and whether it is playing) and sends it to our server so that everyone hears the same thing at the same time. The room queue is kept only while the room is active; the tracks played in a room (video ID, title, artist, duration and time) are stored in the history of that room.
- Technical data: our servers process your IP address to deliver the service and to protect it from abuse (rate limiting). It is not stored in our database; it may appear in server logs that are kept for a short time.
What we do not collect
- No email address, password, Google account data, payment data, browsing history or content from any website other than music.youtube.com.
- No advertising, analytics or tracking tools.
How we use it
- Only to run listening rooms (synchronised playback, the shared queue and the participant list), to keep the service secure and to produce aggregate usage statistics such as the number of rooms and played tracks.
- We do not sell data, share it with third parties or use it for advertising, profiling or credit decisions.
Retention
- The live state of a room is deleted automatically 30 minutes after the room becomes empty.
- Device accounts, room history and play history are kept while the service is operated, unless you ask us to delete them.
Your choices
- You can change your nickname in the extension settings and leave a room at any time. Uninstalling the extension removes the access token from your browser.
- To have the data associated with your device deleted, contact us through the support contact on the Chrome Web Store listing and include your nickname.
